Nothing to update. Normal service will be resumed next week.

@#/*&% Kid Silk Haze!

Language edited to protect innocent ears. I’m still plodding on with Kiri. I thought I had the measure of Kid Silk Haze. I was terrified it would snap at the slightest tug at first, but I got used to it and finally started to almost enjoy knitting with it. Almost.

And then this morning I discovered this:

You might want to click on the photo to get a better idea of what I’m pointing at, lest you think I’m seeing things. There is a gap – a huge, cavernous gap – at the edge of the leaf. And I have no idea how it got there. Even the thought of frogging it is laughable, so I’m going to be left with a ridiculous gappy leaf, laughing at me whenever I wear the shawl. Ugh. The only hope is that it will disappear, or at least reduce in size, when the shawl is blocked.

Thank you for all your responses about the grey socks. The majority decision was definitely that they would be perfectly acceptable. So grey socks it will be! Hope to have photos of them soon. I’ve been knitting a few things that aren’t bloggable for various reasons, so it’s not that I haven’t been knitting – I just can’t share it!

Grey socks are dull – discuss

Firstly, thank you for the lovely comments about the sweater. I love it, of course, but I’m aware that not everyone has the same taste. So it was gratifying to see that I’m not that bizarre in my design choices. Of course, those people that did hate it probably just kept quiet..!

So! Christmas presents. After completing my mum’s birthday present well in advance, I decided that it would be a Good Idea to knit at least one or two Christmas gifts in plenty of time as well. I have set up a Bertie-along and am planning to knit two Berties, one of which will be my grandma’s present.

Now, for another relative, I want to knit some socks. I really like the “Gentleman’s Sock” pattern from Nancy Bush’s Knitting Vintage Socks and it uses three balls of St Ives 4ply Sock Yarn. Now I have 3 balls of this yarn, but I’m not sure about the colour:

Grey socks don’t scream Christmas present to me. But maybe that’s because they remind me of school uniform. I really can’t decide, so I’ve set up a little poll for everyone else to decide for me:

I will abide by the majority decision!

I’ll have to get started on them soon, because I have a lot of knitting coming up. Kerrie at Magknits has asked me to submit a design for a future issue. I guess this makes me a proper designer person!

Behold the sweater!

So glad the heatwave is over!

Pattern: Basic raglan sleeve sweater from The Knitter’s Handy Book of Sweater Patterns
Modifications: Waist and bust shaping, lace inset panel on sleeves and lower neckline
Yarn: GGH Bali in shade #92, Erika – 9 x 50g (plus a tiny bit of a 10th!)

This is the first sweater I’ve ever knitted for myself and I’m really happy with how it turned out. It fits so well, especially around the bust, thanks to the short row shaping. The yarn is very soft after washing, and it’s going to be perfect for the autumn.

Here’s a close up of the sleeve, with the lace pattern travelling all the way to the top. You can also see the bust shaping doing its job!

Now I’m going have a break from BIG projects to finish up a few small things and maybe knit some Christmas presents!

What’s this?

Could it possibly be a finished sweater, soaking in my sink?

All will be revealed..!

Two sleeves = happiness

This was my raglan sweater as of this morning:

I finished the second sleeve after a very intense knitting session yesterday. The World Cup has been very useful in that respect – not so keen on watching every single match like Mr B, but I have little competitions with myself to see how many rows (or rounds) I can get done in each half!

I’ve now joined the sleeves to the body and am slowly decreasing for the raglan shaping. However, it was easier to photograph the jumper before it was all bunched up on a circular needle! I now need to think about what sort of neckline to do – I’m following the instructions for a crew neck, but I don’t want anything too close-fitting.

It does feel very strange to be knitting a huge sweater in the current heatwave. It’s like having a big blanket on my knees for one thing. And I’m not going to be able to wear it for a couple of months at least! But once this project is done, I can concentrate on smaller things until the autumn, when it will be time for Rogue.
