North Sea or the Frog Pond?

I promised shawl progress photos, so here they are. It might be a case of “blink and you’ll miss it”, though. The photograph in Folk Shawls looks lovely:

If you can’t read the writing on the photo, it’s called “North Sea Shawl”. The problem is, my progress is anything but lovely:

The yarn is amazingly cheap, 100% cashmere which I bought from eBay. It bulks up considerably when it’s washed, so the stringiness doesn’t bother me. In fact, I’m not sure what is bothering me about the pattern. Maybe it’s the simplicity after knitting with Fluff Silk Haze. This cashmere is very smooth, doesn’t get caught on the needles or split or do anything wrong. And the pattern is so easy I learnt it after knitting half a row, unlike Kiri. I have just the right amount of yarn for the shawl, too…

On the suggestion of a wise monkey I know, I have googled the pattern to see if any other finished ones are on blogs elsewhere, and those I have found do look lovely. So I might just stop procrastinating and get knitting!

  1. Pretty. *strokes it* I think it’ll look lovely once it’s come along another few inches and there are more repeats to ogle.

  2. mmmm difficult call. Are you enjoying knitting it? and just not sure about the finished product? Or are you hating every minute? If you like knitting it, then keep going, and if you’re not sure about it when finished – then it can go as a Chrissie present. If you’re not enjoying knitting it then that’s a different call altogether. Definitely frog and find something worth your time. Personally I think it looks lovely, and I know how that cashmere blooms when it’s washed it’ll be gorgeous! (You could also try knitting a 2 x 2 pattern swatch and wash it – might spur you on when you know how lovely it will look.)

  3. I think it is one of those things that will look super when it’s finished but doesn’t look so inspiring on the journey.

  4. The monkey is wise – you should always listen to her, for she guides us well ;)

  5. I think it’s lovely. I have to start lace knitting, but I’m a bit scared !!
