A slight detour from my original plan for my Sockapalooza pal’s socks. She didn’t state a preference to yarn weight in her profile, but I emailed her to check (after I bought the yarn, of course, because I am clever like that!) and she would prefer something in fingering weight. So the lovely Rowan Superwash DK will be put aside for cosy winter socks. And my search for fingering weight yarns in suitable colours begins. I really want to use a yarn that isn’t too common in the US, but it is so hard to find something that is machine washable, soft enough for socks and comes in cheerful, non-varigated colours. For shame, UK yarn manufacturers!
In the meantime, I have also volunteered to be a Sock Saviour. Fortunately, my new pal has a definite colour preference of apple green and I have two yarns in my stash which would suit:

But the big question is – which is more apple-ish?

Now green yarn immediately says LEAFY LACE! to me, but I’ve emailed my pal to see if she has a preference for lace or cables before I do anything. I’m learning!

I think the Opal looks more like Granny Smith apples to me. I think it would look great in a sock with a little picot (pie crust) edge! Yum!
I love the colour of the Opal yarn, it’s very scrummy.
i have had that Opal in my stash (it moved to live with a friend and is a happy pair of socks now) and I have to say it is really beautiful colour. I have knit few pairs of socks from Opal and they have all been well liked. On the other hand that 4-ply would make so soft and comfortable socks for bare feet…
just because….well you know me LOL I think the rowan is more appley soz LOL you can ignore me if you choose
and you know I do colour requests LOL
Either one makes a nice apple color. I guess if I had to chose I would pick the opal.
From my screen the Opal looks more zingy but the 4ply soft is so lovely to use…
I like the Rowan too.
But the Opal is definitely lovely.
I am currently knitting a baby sock in Rowan 4 ply soft and can confirm its loveliness, but the Opal is definately more appley…
Hrm. Superwash sock yarn that’s not varigated and not common in the US? *laughs self silly*
Also, I prefer the Opal to the Rowan for apple-ness.
My vote is for the Opal, also. On my monitor it looks must closer to the actual apple color. They’re both pretty, though!
The Opal is a decidedly apple green. Juicy!
I am with the Opal group. Now, I am trying to remember where I saw a pattern than had apples in it. Or was it cherrys that you could turn into apples? I will comment it to you if I can track it down.
Absolutely the Opal for applishness (Is that a word? Is now!). And if you want leafy lace, you can’t beat Elfine’s Socks (http://autoscopia.com/amelia/assets/elfinesocks.pdf). lovely lacy pattern, gratuitous literary references from one of my all-time favourite books.
I also like the Opal for Granny Smith apply-ness, however the Rowan is a nice soft green apple, more like a Golden Delicious (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Golden_delicious_apple.jpg)
or this one – http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Antonovka.jpg.
I’m sure either would be lovely!
Opal for apples!
Definitely the Opal. Just done a pair in the same colour myself and it is very applely.
Have you seen the new Jitterbug velvet colorways from Colinette? It is a easy care yarn and they have two shades of green.
both look appley to me but i’d go for rowan for its softness and quality….thats me tho…you can tell me to shut up!!!!
lol
