See the problem? No? How about now?

The vest fits perfectly up to the armholes and then it goes very, very wrong. If I wore a lot of padding around my arms, perhaps it would fit better, but they’re just too deep and the fabric just flops over and looks stupid. Ideally I need to lose about two to four inches from the length.
I am a lot calmer about this than I was yesterday. If I’d written this post yesterday afternoon then the language would have been enough to make a sailor blush. But I ranted a bit to Diane and eventually realised that in the end there was only one thing I could do.
So when I can face it, I’m unpicking all the ribbing, undoing the crocheted steeks and very slowly unravelling back to before the first steek and starting again with a revised chart for the rate of decreasing. But this weekend will be sock knitting. You know where you are with a sock.

Oh no! But at least it is fixable – and the bottom bit fits really well – and it will be fabulous when it is finished.
Oh no!
I can imagine the language yesterday, I think I would have been the same! But it’s good you can fix it. Roo’s right, it’ll be amazing when it’s finished!
oh no! Min came out exactly the same. I have been thinking of machine steeking (and then cutting) the shoulders – which will raise the very low v-neck and hopefully fix the extra large armhole problem. As of yet it is just sitting sadly in a drawer.
That’s a shame. I think it’s because you’ve shrunk too much!
Oh NO! This must be why people knit top-down! You have my sympathies. Looking forward to seeing the revised edition!
Oh honey, I’m so so sorry..
*hugs*
Is there anything I can send you virtually to help?
Oh no – I know it’s no consolation now – but it looks great and will be FAB once you’ve fixed the sizing.
Oh no! All of that beautiful stitching and hard work! Take a deep breath and start fixing it. I know it’ll come out great and be fabulous!
I feel your pain…..
oh, what a bummer. i made a camisole that turned out like that once, it was so awful it was funny how the bust would have fit an amazon. enjoy your sock relaxation, that sounded like a wise choice for the weekend.
Really? You’ll do all that reworking? You won’t just toss it? Wow. Amazing. But it’ll be worth it.
Oh Kate, how awful. It’s so beautiful, and required such careful work already–not fair for it to go so wrong. I wish you good luck with the fixes, I can’t even wrap my head around all the work you’ve outlined. But I hope you end up with something that fits well & you love in the end!
Enjoy the socks in the meantime, that sounds nice and relaxing.
Oh dear…all that work, I can understand why you need to get some comfort from a sock before you take on that mega task!
I think I would have wept bitter tears of disappointment
You sound like it’s not gong to defeat you though!
Oh nooooo! I’d heard that the shoulders on this turned out a little big sometimes, but yours is more than “little” big.
Do you really have to go all the way back to the first steek? You can’t just un-do the ribbing and then un-ravel a couple of inches off the top, then sew the shoulders back together?
(Off-topic: I really love the shirt you’re wearing under the vest!)
Oh no! I’m so sorry. You were so excited about it too. =(
oh…that’s such a shame…and it looked really good!!! I don’t envy you unpicking it though…poor you!
Oh no, I’m so sorry! It’s so beautiful in every other way. Can you just pull up the shoulders and give it the sewing machine treatment? All that work, just thinking about this makes me queasy.
oh no!! (so behind, yet again!) It’s too bad there wasn’t/isn’t a different solution – HUGS!
