The only time I’ve ever bought any Wollmeise yarn is back before it suddenly became the most popular yarn in the universe and I could carefully choose a colour. I have tried to buy more since then, but I never manage to snag any when the shop is updated. Until last week…
I happened to randomly visit the shop after Rubbishknitter updated her blog with her lovely Wollmeise cardigan and there was one – one! – skein of 80/20 Twin left. No photo, but I didn’t care; I snapped it up before you could say unnecessary-yarn-buying-just-because-it’s-popular. I did notice that the name of the yarn was “Karotten” and though it’s a while since I took GCSE German, I don’t think it takes a genius to work out that it probably means “carrot” and I hate orange. But I was getting Wollmeise!
And then it arrived.

It is ORANGE. Not just a bit semi-solid which I could cope with but, very very very orange indeed and proud of it.
There is no way on Earth I will ever use this yarn. It smells wonderful and feels divine but I just can’t look at it. I could sell it on, perhaps, but instead I’d rather give it to someone who really wants it and will make something suitable with it.
So to win this very orange skein of yarn, please leave a comment saying what you would knit or crochet with it. The yarn will go to the person who has what I consider the best suggestion! Comments will close Sunday evening, around 9pm UK time.

LOL! I feel EXACTLY the same way you do about the color orange. It is lovely on autumn leaves and pumpkins and, of course, oranges, but completely unnecessary in garments.
I had a similar experience with some Cherry Tree Hill sock yarn which photographed as a soft apricot (on my computer monitor, at least) but when it got it here is was adamantly orange.
BTW, I do NOT want to be entered into the contest. I just wanted to share!
Woo – very orange. I lurve orange and am looking about for some orange 4ply (possibly burnt orange rather than carroty orange) to make a cardigan.
I’d use the Wollmeise to make a pair of Knotty gloves http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/knotty-gloves to go with my brown duffel coat this coming winter.
I like very bright oranges. Normal orange makes me look a bit washed out, but I can’t resist very bright! I’d use the Wollmeise to make either a Milkweed shawl http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/milkweed-shawl or a Petal Edge Scarf http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/petal-edge-scarf I think the yarn would look good with a pattern that had points on the edge like those ones.
Why you should give me the Wollmeise:
1) I love orange. Truly. Just look at my projects, I’ve knitted two orange tops recently.
2) I’ve never seen nor touched Wollmeise.
3) I’d like to knit a Marina shawl with it.
I would absolutely have to make the Ishbel by Ysolda Teague (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ishbel) in screaming bright orange! I have not ever worked with Wollmeise, but I hear it is a treat, so I think an Ishbel would be the way to go.
Either that or a Citron Shawl…it is orange afterall…
I think any small child of mine needs an orange cardigan – I would probably make a February Baby Sweater (if it is a girl) or another garter yoke cardigan for a boy.
I may stripe it with black too.
My friend’s youngest daughter loves orange – it’s her favourite colour. She’s just out of University and has got a job working for the United Nations. She spends her time travelling to some extremely obscure countries that I’ve never even heard of, trying to get the message of safe drinking water for all across. I think I’d knit her a pair of socks to comfort her through some extremely chilly winters around the world.
Um…a scarf for a deer hunter? A hat for a deer hunter? This is twisted, but I kinda like it.
I like orange but I don’t like to wear it too near my face, plus this is sock yarn… so I’d have to say gloves or socks. I’ve heard that Wollmeise has generous yardage, so I’d probably take advantage of that and knit intricately-cabled socks like Pamina, Marina Labyrinth, or Cable Net – that would be a fun challenge, and the bright orange would draw people’s attention so I could show off the cables. Then I would wear them to brighten things up on the darkest winter days.
I am sitting here in an orange dress on a hot, hot, day and what you succeeded in doing is send me off to look at yarn for an orange thing I may need on a cold day – they also have one in a delicious red fading to orange (rather like my dress) called ‘Campari’…sadly sold out
(
I would make gloves, probably Farinelli by Ysolda Teague (second mention here I see!) – just because the thought of posh looking lace in blisteringly bright orange makes me smile! (I already have orange socks
)
I would use it for a nice shawl to cheer me up on miserable days. Bright colours are definitely good for that
Maybe a Citron, but something with a nice simple look that would allow the yarn to be ORANGE!
