Leaf Cable Cardigan

Pattern: Sirdar 9428
Yarn: James C Brett Kool Kotton, 7¼ x 50g balls in colour: #KK12
Needles: 3mm and 375mm circs

Done, although no modelled photo for this one as I hate it. :-( I know that cardigans that button at the top and hang downwards look dreadful on me, but with all the excitement about leaves and knitting a cardigan in just over a week, I didn’t stop to think about whether I’d actually like the end product.

It doesn’t help that what is a wide collar becomes even wider after being worn all day. By the end of yesterday, I was sporting an off-the-shoulder, come-hither look because I got fed up with adjusting the shoulders every five minutes. I would blame the yarn, but as the original pattern was designed for Sirdar Simply Recycled DK which has the exact same fibre content, I’d have expected someone to take into account the fact that it will grow through being worn… :-?

Also, the body of the cardigan is just a bit too short on me to balance out the illusion of width caused by the shoulders, so I look something like this:

I am 5’8″ – not willowy tall but not tiny, either. I just look like a square leafy blob and it makes me sad. So I’ll stick this cardigan on a shelf until I can find someone with very wide shoulders to palm it off on.

Would it be any better fastened all the way down the front? Maybe try it with safety pins around the house, but since it doesn’t sound like you’d fancy re-knitting the front band to include buttonholes I suppose it would have to be press studs and buttons-just-for-show like Laika …

  2. Gift it away- at least it was fun to make and looks great on the hanger!

  3. Aww honey! I’m so sorry.. :( It looks great on the hanger and it’s such a shame it grows with wear! I have a few knits in my closet that need ripping out and used for other projects… so I know your pain.

  4. Ahhhh….. I’m so sorry to hear about your sweater :( It’s such a lovely design and the color is beautiful. I so feel your pain …. I have a vest that I crocheted that I absolutely love, but like your cardigan, it grows as I wear it. I’ve even tried putting it in the dryer hoping it would shrink up a bit, and that didn’t work either. I’m considering donating it to a local women’s shelter in hopes that will go to someone who can wear it .

  5. The cardy does look great, you finished it quickly and its very well made so I can imagine your disappointment. I agree it should leave immediately, someone will love it.

  6. Oh what a shame, and it look so lovely too.

  7. Oh no, what a pain. It looks great on the hanger!

sucky! It does look great though and . . . you totally made me laugh with the Mr Strong. I loved those books as a kid!

  9. awww, that’s a sad story. it looks so beautiful, and I can’t believe you look too similar to Mr Strong!!

could you do anything with the neckline to stop it stretching? I had a similar falling-off-shoulders issue with a toddler dress, and I crocheted a single crochet border round the neck edge to reinforce it, which did the trick. Or failing that you could maybe sew some stabilising fabric lining on the underneath of the neck ribbing?

OT: I’m glad you posted the classic Mr Strong picture though. In the new Mr Men on the telly he is a triangle which upsets me with its wrongness.
